![]() ![]() Since I'm 5'8 in height and my weight is 148 pounds, since I normally encounter wave heights in my message above, I needed a board with enough "flex" (stiffness) and "spring" in it to generate a fast speed from the waves I regularly surf at my weight. When it comes to the Parallax model, there are "now" four lengths. My Parallax longboard was shaped by Ryan Engle. These are fast boards with lots of volume in them which is tricky to do in their given lengths. They are the Outlier, Parallax and Neo Classic. And he designed three of these boards to do just that. I think this design change was promoted by CJ Nelson. But I changed my mind when I found there is a third type of board.Ī board that can be trimmed (steered) from the middle of the board where one does not have to turn the board by having one of their back feet on the left or right rail or stepping back on the board and putting the back foot over the fin. Since I do not do any nose riding, I "initially" wanted a high performance longboard. Most longboards are either high performance boards with multiple fin boxes or single fin nose rider boards. Waves from 1 1/2' to 4' in height (on me, from knee to chest high).Ģ) The board would have to be fast for my weight and the waves I would encounter.ģ) The board would have enough flex (stiffness) and (spring) to accomplish what I wanted in the first two above criteria and it would also have enough volume in it so I could surf these types of waves without any problems.Ĥ) And the last missing detail is the correct fin size and shape. Stocking CJ's beautiful Thunderbolt Longboards is a real coup for all the team at Boardshop and riding them is proving to be a total game changer for many of us who'd never considered longboarding until we saw these boards in the flesh and had the chance to get them wet. When I decided to get a prone surfing longboard, I had set out some criteria for it.ġ) A longboard which would work will with my weight of (as of right now) 148 pounds where the waves I would normally encounter. These boards are 100% hand layups and finished to the very highest standard, and it's worth remembering that the board you buy from us is exactly the same as CJ is riding in all those mouth watering video's! The Fused Cell EPS Foam Blank is wrapped in a Core Shield PVC Shell which affords flexible protection to the EPS core. Thunderbolt Red uses a 6 + 4oz fibreglass deck lamination with 6 + 2oz on the bottom. Thunderbolt Red uses a Fused Cell EPS Foam Blank which incorporates a Carbon Fibre Multi-Component Flex Control System which replaces a traditional wooden stringer which along with the Xeon Fibreglass lamination delivers a familiar flex which will remain for the extended lifespan of these durable boards. The Colapintail longboard is constructed using 'Thunderbolt Red' a 100% hand layup Xeon Fibreglass Lamination which delivers a competition weight and flex surfboard. In fact the only time I ride wooden stringers is when I'm doing R&D with Eden Saul or Ryan Engle or Wayne Rich or Ian Chisholm or others". When CJ was asked what the downside of Thunderbolt Technology was he answered."There is no downside or I wouldn't be riding them 90% of the time. I think my dad had his own dreams of professional surfing that were forcefully passed down to me". "My father had surfed nearly his whole life learning ocean safety and wave riding from my grandfather at their summer home on the Balboa Peninsula in Newport Beach during the early 50s. "I've surfed this board at many different reef breaks in Southern California but mostly catered it to the wave style of San Onofre, where the waves are long and soft" - Corey ColapintoĬJ is a 3rd generation San Franciscan growing up in the Bay Area and following his father and grandfather into a lifetime of surfing. This mid-length was the starting point for the Colapintail longboard, and is a more versatile board in conditions where a longboard is not the best option. The pintail along with the down rails allow the Colapintail to execute very smooth and critical turns while the single fin assists trim and stability. The CJ Nelson Colapintail Mid Length bridges the gap between classic logging and high-performance longboarding.Ĭory Colapinto had been working on this shape for a few years with input from CJ and Ryan Engle.
